From Denmark to Cyprus: Making the EU Fit for Enlargement

Join us for a timely discussion on the handover of the EU Council Presidency from Denmark to Cyprus. We will reflect on the challenges and opportunities shaping the enlargement agenda during the Danish Presidency in the second half of 2025, and explore what lies ahead under the Cypriot Presidency in the first half of 2026. This conversation takes place against the backdrop of the rapid progress made by Montenegro and Albania on their paths to EU membership, which has prompted the Union to prioritise pre-enlargement policy reviews, consider proposals for simplifying the enlargement process, and assess post-accession safeguard mechanisms suggested by think tanks. Drawing on insights from Brussels, Copenhagen, Nicosia, and Belgrade, we will discuss how candidate countries can best leverage current developments in response to the growing strategic imperative for timely and credible enlargement.
