• Times of Crisis, Time for Think Tanks

    Case of the Western Balkans

The year 2020 was taken hostage by the COVID-19 pandemic. Media outlets, political agendas , but also, the minds of regular citizens were seized by COVID-related topics. Think tanks were no different. Because of the political, economic and social impact of the pandemic, democratic norms in many hybrid regimes, including ones in the Western Balkans continued to erode.  Hence, the conditions for inclusive and evidence-based policymaking have worsened significantly. Despite these unfavourable challenges, think tanks in the Western Balkans are finding ways to have their voices heard and produce a homegrown impact.

This event aims to discuss the challenges and opportunities for  think tanks in inducing democratic transformation in the Western Balkans and reflect on how  they  can position themselves in a post-pandemic world. For the fourth time, CEP has the honour to join hundreds of leading think tanks worldwide in hosting simultaneous national events as part of the 2020 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report Launch, promoted by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the Lauder Institute, University of Pennsylvania, USA.
