Three round tables in Novi Sad, Belgrade and Užice were organized by the European Policy Centre and Ecological Centre “Habitat” on the topic of implementation of the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA) under the title “Environmental Impact Assessment and Strategic Environmental Assessment in Serbia – Ten Years after”.

The subject of the round tables refers to the fact that the Law on Environmental Impact Assessment and the Law on Strategic Environmental Assessment were adopted in 2004, and are being implemented for a period of ten years. The presentation of the first research results pointed to gaps concerning the capacities of the competent authorities, as well as to the deficits in the implementation of the relevant legislation with regard to institutional arrangements, quality of procedure and public participation.

Having in mind environmental standards in general, but also requirements deriving from EU law concerning environmental protection, research results point to the necessity to improve the implementation of EIA and SEA. The round table participants came forth with comments on the preliminary research results, which will be taken into account during the finalization of the study in the coming period, particularly while drawing conclusions.
