Citizens and civil society can be significant ally to the State Audit Institution in strengthening control over the spending of tax payers’ money and in the creation of government accountability in Serbia, it is general conclusion from the presentation of the Study “Civil Society and Citizens in the External Audit Process: Comparative Study of International Practices with recommendations for implementation in Serbia” done by the European Policy Centre. Presentation was held today, on August 29th 2013 in the Small plenary hall of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

Presentation was opened by the president of the National Assembly, Nebojša Stefanović, who highlighted the importance of the role of parliament and citizens in oversight over the budget expenditures and also stressed that the time is ripe for the involvement of citizens and civil society organisations in process of external audit having in mind that State Audit Institution of Serbia commenced with performance audit and especially having in mind launch of EU accession negotiations of Serbia and in that regard finding the right model for the involvement of civil society in negotiation process.
